Isn't Falmouth Nice?
Growing up on Cape Cod in the 1970s, there was a bumper sticker that read, "Isn't Falmouth Nice?" I saw it almost every day but never gave it much thought. It wasn't until I left the Cape and returned 25 years later that I truly appreciated just how special Falmouth is.
Every Cape town has its own personality, but Falmouth offers an incredible variety of lifestyles. Whether you're drawn to beaches, boating, golf, working farms, horseback riding, or a lively downtown, it's easy to understand why so many people choose to call Falmouth home.
One of my favorite things about Falmouth is that no two villages feel exactly alike. West Falmouth, Woods Hole, North Falmouth, East Falmouth, and downtown each have their own character, architecture, and waterfronts. Understanding those differences helps buyers find the neighborhood that best fits their lifestyle while helping sellers position their home for the right buyer.
Falmouth is known for much more than its beaches. The Shining Sea Bikeway stretches more than 10 miles from North Falmouth to Woods Hole, winding past cranberry bogs, marshes, beaches, and working farms. Boaters enjoy numerous marinas and yacht clubs, golfers have five outstanding 18-hole courses, and those who prefer the countryside will appreciate riding stables and miles of scenic back roads.
Downtown Falmouth is one of my favorite places to spend an afternoon, with locally owned shops, restaurants, cafés, and community events. Old Silver Beach has long been one of my favorite places to watch the sunset. Cape Cod Life recognized it as one of the Cape's best sunset beaches, and after spending many evenings there, I couldn't agree more.
Falmouth is also home to one of the world's premier marine science communities. Woods Hole is home to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), NOAA Fisheries, and several internationally recognized research organizations. Combined with excellent healthcare, Highfield Hall & Gardens , ferry service to Martha's Vineyard , and a thriving year-round community, it's easy to see why Falmouth appeals to both year-round residents and second-home owners.
You don't have to be a beach lover to love living in Falmouth. Whether your perfect afternoon is sailing, golfing, cycling, horseback riding, exploring conservation trails, visiting local farms, or browsing farm stands, there's truly something for almost everyone.
My years of appraising thousands of homes throughout southeastern Massachusetts have given me a unique appreciation for what makes each Falmouth neighborhood special from a real estate perspective.
Today, whenever I think of that old bumper sticker, I finally understand exactly what it meant—Falmouth really is nice.
Whether you're searching for your first home, a waterfront retreat, or preparing to sell, I'd be happy to share what I've learned after growing up here and returning to make Cape Cod home again.
